Fr. Vincent Mesi, OFM, Pastor of Mission San Luis Rey Parish, Welcomes You!

Dear Friends: Peace and good!

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of St.John the Baptist. This is an ancient solemnity reaching back to the fourth century. We celebrate this feast on June 24th in keeping with Luke 1:36 which notes that Elizabeth was six months pregnant at the time of the Annunciation of the Lord. John the Baptist was the great prophet and herald of Jesus the Messiah. He prepared the way of the Lord and revealed Jesus to others as both the Messiah and the Lamb of God. St. John is the example of one who points the way to Jesus and how we can be united with God. With John we cry out: “Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight his paths.”

As I announced in the bulletin last weekend, there are still some openings for our California Mission Pilgrimage, September 9‐18, 2018! We will fly to Oakland and meet our private coach for the duration of the trip. You will stay at the beautiful San Damiano Retreat Center, nestled in the hills above the quaint town of Danville and also at St. Francis Retreat Center in the rolling hills near the old California town of San Juan Bautista. Our lodging in Monterey and in Santa Barbara are beautiful and comfortable. Each day we will visit and celebrate Mass in one of the historic California Missions. Several very interesting docent tours have been planned as well. Along with the spiritual and historical side of things, you will enjoy each other’s company and tour some pretty amazing places such as de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Monterey Aquarium and a scenic ferry ride across the San Francisco Bay! Please call me right away for more details!

This coming Friday June 29th, on the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Friars Ruben Melendez and Ivan Cortes will be ordained to the priesthood in Mexico. They will return to our parish next Sunday, July 1st to celebrate a “Mass of Thanksgiving” at the Noon Spanish Mass. A recep􀆟on will follow the Mass. You are invited to bring a card of congratulations to the reception. Many blessings upon these newly ordained friars!

Love, Fr. Vince
