Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ
World Mission Sunday celebrates our common responsibility to share the Gospel with everyone, to reach out with compassion to the far reaches of the world. St. Francis himself sent his brothers out “as pilgrims and strangers” to take the Gospel to all peoples, cultures, and places. With the Holy Spirit as his guide, Francis took the Gospel to the Holy Land where he met with the Sultan himself. Our Franciscan brothers and priests from the Province of St. Barbara continue the tradition begun by Francis, serving in many missions across the world.
Fr. Charles Talley, OFM, is currently Pastor of Kristi Lekamen- Corpus Christi– a parish in Visby, on Gotland Island, Sweden.
Fr. Tommy King, OFM, currently works in Honduras and previously worked as a missionary in Peru and Guaymas.
Fr. Martin Ibarra, OFM, directs the Casa Franciscana Mission, in Guaymas, Mexico. Some of the programs there include free dining rooms, shelter for migrants, help for immigrants, a youth center, and healthcare clinics. Our Franciscan brothers visit the marginalized areas of Guaymas where farmworkers, seniors, and the homebound receive care.
You might remember this past March, our parish held a baked goods sale on the Feast of St. Joseph. The proceeds were given to an orphanage in Tijuana and the Casa Franciscana ministry in Guaymas. In April, our pastor, Fr. Oscar, visited Guaymas to bring funds, prayer, and medical care to the poor and vulnerable.
By sharing the work of these vital ministries, our parish embraces Catholic social teaching, remembering the dignity of the poor, and the importance of sharing our prayer, our wealth, and extending our community to include the poor.
This World Mission Sunday may brotherly love abide in you. May the Holy Spirit inspire you to feed the hungry, help the afflicted, and practice hospitality. You never know when your assistance will help our Franciscan brothers unknowingly host angels at their tables. (From Hebrews 13:1) . Click here to donate to World Mission Sunday online.
