On You, My Favor Rests

Saint Luke

Today we end our Christmas Time with the feast in honor of the Baptism of the Lord. Along with the Epiphany and the Marriage Feast at Cana, the baptism of Jesus is another “theophany” or “revelation” of who Jesus is and what his mission is. When Jesus comes to the Jordan to be baptized by John, we hear the voice of God the Father saying to him: “You are my beloved Son. On you, my favor rests.” And thus, Jesus is commissioned by the Father and anointed Messiah. Our baptism marked the beginning of our Christian lives. God the Father looked upon us with pride and declared: “You are my beloved sons and daughters, upon whom my favor rests.” As we bless ourselves with holy water today, may this not be just a habit but a reminder of our baptism, that great event which brought us into God’s family and formed us into a beautiful and intimate communion with God.

On January 29th, we will have our annual Discernment Process for new Pastoral Council members. The parish pastoral council has been established to foster and maintain a parish plan through which we can live out the values and spirit of the Gospel. Might God be calling you to this ministry? Please see today’s bulletin for further information.

This Thursday we will continue our study of St. Luke’s Gospel with a reflection on Luke’s “Parables of Mercy.” Some of these parables, such as the Prodigal Son, are the most inspiring words of the whole Bible! See you this Thursday for delicious soup and our study of the Gospel. Please bring your bibles.

In closing, I am saddened to announce that our parish administrator, Ms. Kathleen Flanagan, is leaving us and will be taking on another role in the Province of St. Barbara. In her new position, she will be working closely with the various Franciscan ministries of our Province to help ensure that the Franciscan charism and spirit is an indelible focus for our ministries whether parishes, retreat centers, boards, schools and so on. Kathleen will still be a member of our parish. All are invited to a farewell reception in the Serra Gardens following the 10:00 a.m. Mass, the date is to be determined. Kathleen, we wish you all the best and God’s blessings upon your exciting future! Have a great week!

Love, Fr. Vince
