As Filipinos begin to celebrate their 500 years of Christianity, the diocese’s Filipino Catholic community invites everyone to a Vigil Mass for Simbang Gabi, the tradition of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary as she awaits the birth of her Son, Jesus.

The Simbang Gabi (Filipino for “Night Mass”) Vigil Mass will be celebrated by San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy, with Auxiliary Bishops John Dolan and Ramón Bejarano. The vigil Mass, organized for the first time at the diocese, has the theme of “Lighting the Way to Christ: A Legacy of Faith.” The evening will begin with a procession of parols, colorful star-shaped lanterns, that remind the faithful, like the star of Bethlehem, that Jesus is the “Light of the World” and present among them. Afterward, there will be the recitation of the Rosary, followed by the Mass by candlelight.

As we will not celebrate Simbang Gabi at Mission San Luis Rey Parish due to the COVID Pandemic, we invite you to attend this Diocesan option. We thank and pray for our Filipino Community and look forward to future celebrations.
