Fr. Edgardo “Lalo” Jara, OFM

Pastor
Rev. Dr. Edgardo Jara, O.F.M., D.Min, better known as Fr. Lalo, was born in San Carlos, Costa Rica. He grew up in a faith-oriented family where his parents guided him to love God, others, and creation. Even in his youth, he took his faith seriously, as evidenced by his involvement in the youth choir and liturgy. His commitment was further manifested by participating in the Faith Formation Program as a catechist. He studied business administration before joining the Order of Friars Minor in 1997 in Mexico. For family reasons, he left the Franciscan Order and returned to his home country, where he joined the diocesan seminary. Following his Franciscan vocation in 2012, he returned to the Franciscan way of life. Upon completing his novitiate in Burlington, WI, he was sent to the Franciscan School of Theology in California, where he earned a Master of Divinity before being ordained a priest in February 2017. He has been an advisor to the Spanish Small Christian Communities (SCC) in the United States and a member of CEB Continental in the last 10 years. His interest in SCC is reflected in his doctoral dissertation at Fordham University, New York, where he completed a Doctor of Ministry degree. In the last 10 years, he has worked on the East Coast. First at St. Camillus Parish, Silver Spring, MD, then at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Triangle, VA, and lastly in the Archdiocese of Washington DC, again, but in the Office of Cultural Diversity and Outreach, then as Director of the Office of Evangelization and Pastoral Planning. Motivated by his concern for the evangelization and formation of the Hispanic brothers and sisters, Fr. Lalo hosted a Podcast with Juan Diego Network, Cafeteando con P. Lalo (Drinking Coffee with Fr. Lalo), and as one of the National Eucharistic Preachers appointed by the USCCB during the National Eucharistic Revival Process, he has hosted a Podcast, “Fe + Coffee,” to reflect deeper in the Eucharist. He has been a keynote speaker at different diocese congresses across the country, such as the Diocese of Richmond, Diocese of Monterey, Diocese of Reno, Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, and preacher in several parish retreats and workshops as well. In addition to his love for teaching, Fr. Lalo likes hiking, watching movies, getting to know different cultures and traditions, traveling, singing, taking a nap in a hammock, and drinking a lot of coffee.

Fr. Joe Juracek, OFM

Associate Pastor
Fr. Joe (Joseph) Juracek, OFM, was born in Johnson City, New York. During his early college career, he was drafted. After joining the Air Force, he was stationed in Rome, NY, where he was part of the group that started the first-ever Crucillos held on military bases. It was through one of these Crucillo experiences and a zealous conversation about St. Francis and the Friars that he received the call to join the Franciscan Friars. This last May 14th, Fr. Joe celebrated 41 years as an ordained priest. He was first stationed in Holy Name Parish in Garfield, NJ, as a deacon and then as a newly ordained priest for one year. He then went on to higher education, which allowed him to teach Scripture Studies for a year. Then, he studied Spirituality for two years. From there, he was stationed on Long Beach Island and then to St. Stephen of Hungary in NYC, allowing him to minister to a large Hungarian Community. From there, he served as Vicar at the Church of St. Francis for six years. At this Parish, he started a spiritual-based counseling center, which led him to study to be a licensed clinical social worker. He worked at the center for about six more years. After this experience, he moved on to be an Associate Pastor at St. Joseph’s Church in East Rutherford, NJ, and then to be a Pastor at St. Mary’s in Obernburg, NY, where he stayed for six years. After these assignments, he took a three-month sabbatical in the Holy Land. His time there was filled with studying and visiting the holy sites. This would be one of his life's most moving and powerful experiences. When he returned from his sabbatical, he was assigned to St. Mary’s in Pompton Lakes, NJ, where he was in charge of Adult Education. This was followed by an assignment as Pastor of St. Anthony’s Church in Butler, NJ, for six years. Afterward, he returned to the Church of St. Francis in NYC as Pastor. He had served there for a year before coming to the West Coast and our Parish of Mission San Luis Rey.

Fr. Macario “More” Torres, OFM

Associate Pastor
My name is Macario Torres Torres. In México I am known as Jacobo as well. Jacobo was my religious name as a friar. I go by More, as I have been affectionately known since childhood. I was born in Romita, Guanajuato; México. My parents are Juan and Teresa. I have six brothers and four sisters. Romita is a farming town. The inhabitants there are very religious people with a long history of cultural traditions. I grew up in my home town, where I received my early education. I felt a call to religious life and the Franciscan Order as a teenager. I entered the novitiate and professed my first vows but later left the community to pursue other paths. During that time, I taught religion and Spanish in a high school and then studied Theology as a layman for two years. Eventually, I came to the United States of America to study English while living at Casa Juan Diego in San Antonio, Texas. I was accepted as a postulant for our Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart at Joliet, Illinois. Then, I made my novitiate at Cedar Lake, Indiana, and eventually continued my theological studies at Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park, during which I spent a year at Laverna Friary and did ministry at Saint Anthony Parish in Saint Louis, Missouri, before my solemn profession. Then, on October 19, 2013, I solemnly professed my vows in Saint Louis, MO. After that, I moved to Saint Peter’s Church in Chicago and was ordained a Deacon on January 18, 2014 in Saint Peter’s. Finally, I finished my theological studies in May 2014. Also, I helped as a Deacon at Assumption Parish just across the River in Chicago and at Saint John the Baptist Parish in Joliet, Illinois. On September 27, 2014, I was ordained into the office of Priesthood. Right after my ordination, I was appointed Parochial Vicar of Saint Francis Solanus in Quincy, IL. Then, my provincial asked me to move to Joliet, IL, to serve as a Parochial Vicar of Saint John the Baptist. Then, I was appointed pastor of two little parishes in San Antonio, Texas (Mission San Francisco de la Espada and Saint Frances X. Cabrini). Now, my provincial asked me to accept the new assignment as parochial vicar of Mission San Luis Rey Parish in Oceanside, CA, where I hope to faithfully serve the people of God and to work hard as a a good instrument of peace and an authentic follower of our Seraphic Father, Saint Francis of Assisi. I commend myself to your prayers and expect to walk together into this great adventure. Pace e Bene! Your friend, Fr. More Mi nombre es Macario Torres Torres. ¡Paz y Bien! Su amigo, Padre More

Youth Minister
I have grown up here at Mission San Luis Rey Parish since I was seven years old. My relationship with my faith began when a priest from the Parish showed me how to play a few chords on the guitar to a song called Alabaré. I fell in love with the guitar as well as worshiping God through music. From there, I became more involved in the church through the music ministry which led to further service including Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Social Outreach, Youth Ministry, and eventually as a Catechist for the Confirmation program. I have always felt the calling to serve God and my community. My lovely parents, three sisters and I are all active parishioners here at the Mission. I love collecting crosses to hang up on my cross wall! One of my favorite saints is St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, reading, playing guitar, and spending time with my family and friends. Please keep me and our ministry in your prayers.” Siempre he sentido el llamado a servir a Dios y a mi comunidad.

I’m originally from Ohio but moved to California with my family after high school graduation. I attended Chapman University where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. I worked for many years in finance in the medical manufacturing field, but after volunteering for several non-profit organizations I realized that working in a non-profit setting was where I saw my future. I was blessed to become a part of the Mission staff in 2010 as the Director of Finance. In 2018 I took over as the Executive Director at the Mission and Parish Administrator at the Parish. I love to read, go to the movies, hike, play board games, and card games, and bake.

Born and raised in San Diego, CA. I moved to Oceanside when I was very small and have not moved since. I have been married for over ten years and have three lovely boys. Both of my parents were born and raised in Tonatico, Estado de Mexico. I have been a hand-drawn artist all my life since I was a very small boy. I remember drawing hand-drawn birthday cards for my parents. I currently continue to create art but through a different medium which is photography. I love to take landscape photography and portraits. There is just so much peace and tranquility being out in nature and just taking in that sunset or that view of mountains. I find peace being with nature and it gives me time to pray. Some of my main hobbies are drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, videography, and playing soccer. I have a very diverse educational background, I recently received my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) & CPR/AED certification. I have also studied graphic design, and art & design to expand my creativity with my hobbies. I previously just worked at the Mission San Luis Rey Retreat Center for four years. The last year at the mission I worked as a security guard while also helping out at the Retreat Center. Prior to working at the Mission San Luis Rey, I worked as the Purchasing Manager at the Five Star, Five Diamond Awarded, The Lodge at Torrey Pines Resort & Spa in La Jolla, CA. This resort sits right next to the world-famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, home of the annual Farmers Insurance Open and 2008, 2021 U.S. Open. Former President Barrack Obama & Donald Trump, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and many other professional athletes and celebrities have played at this famous golf course and have also stayed at The Lodge at Torrey Pines.
