The truest vision of God comes not from many words but from stillness of heart.
As we celebrate St. Anthony of Padua this weekend and welcome his relics to our Church, I would like to share a brief reflection with the words of St. Anthony. – Fr. Lalo
Silence and the Face of Christ: A Reflection with St. Anthony of Padua
In a world constantly filled with noise, distractions, and restless pursuits, the timeless wisdom of St. Anthony of Padua speaks with remarkable clarity: “If you want to see the face of Christ, stop and collect your thoughts in silence and close the door of your soul to the noise of external things.”
The Call to Silence: St. Anthony’s words remind us that God does not often speak in the thunder of the world, but in the gentle whisper of silence. Just as Elijah encountered the Lord not in the earthquake or fire, but in the “sound of sheer silence” (1 Kings 19:12), so too are we invited to retreat inward, where Christ waits to meet us.
In silence, the heart becomes free from clutter, allowing space for divine grace to enter. Silence is not emptiness; it is sacred fullness—a doorway to encounter God’s presence.
Closing the Door to Noise: The “noise of external things” is not only the literal sounds around us but also the distractions of ambition, worry, pride, and constant busyness. St. Anthony challenges us to “close the door” to these influences so that our souls may rest in God. This is not a call to abandon our responsibilities but to center them in Christ, ensuring that external duties do not drown out the eternal voice of God.
Seeing the Face of Christ: To “see the face of Christ” is the ultimate desire of every believer. It is not only a vision for eternity but a reality for the present. In prayer, in Scripture, in the quiet of our hearts, Christ reveals His face to us. Silence purifies the gaze of the soul, allowing us to recognize Him more clearly in the Eucharist, in the poor, and in the daily encounters of our lives.
Inspiration from St. Anthony: Known as the “Hammer of Heretics” and a great preacher, St. Anthony combined profound knowledge with humility and devotion. Yet even with his eloquence, he reminds us that the truest vision of God comes not from many words but from stillness of heart. His teaching remains a light for those who long to deepen their relationship with Christ in today’s busy world.
May the Lord always give you his peace.
