Wedding Preparation & Guidelines

At Mission San Luis Rey Parish, we are honored to walk with couples preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage. Whether you are a long-time parishioner or visiting our historic mission, we are here to support you as you begin this sacred journey.

As a Catholic and Franciscan community, we joyfully congratulate you on your decision to enter into the sacred covenant of Matrimony. This moment marks a beautiful beginning in your shared journey of love and faith. Please know that our entire parish family is holding you in prayer as you take this sacred step, trusting in God’s grace to guide and bless you both.

At Mission San Luis Rey Parish, we believe that preparing for Marriage is more than planning a ceremony—it’s preparing for a lifetime of unity, trust, and spiritual growth. Our marriage preparation process is intentional, pastoral, and rooted in the life of the Church. Couples begin this journey at least one year prior to their desired wedding date.

Your first step is simple: contact our parish office to schedule an initial interview. From that moment on, we will accompany you—listening, guiding, and supporting you through every stage of preparation.

Getting Started:

  • All marriage requests must begin with an initial intake meeting with a pastoral team member. This is required before setting any wedding date.

  • Preparation must begin at least six months prior to the desired wedding date.

  • You will be assigned a priest or deacon to guide you through the marriage preparation process.

  • Couples will take part in the FOCUS Inventory and/or meet with a sponsor couple as part of their preparation.

Required Documents:

  • A recent Baptismal Certificate (issued within 6 months of the wedding).

  • Affidavits of Freedom to Marry (completed by parents or close family/friends).

  • A valid Marriage License, submitted at least two weeks before the wedding.

  • If widowed, a death certificate of the former spouse.

  • If previously married in the Church, a church annulment must be granted before setting a date.

  • If previously married civilly, a lack of canonical form must be declared.

Couples must begin their preparation at least one year before the intended wedding date. This ensures time for meetings, retreats, and completion of all documentation.

Not necessarily. Non-parishioners are welcome with the pastor’s approval.

Yes. If you wish to invite a visiting Catholic priest or deacon, they must receive approval from our pastor and submit a Letter of Good Standing at least three months before the wedding.

Depending on your situation, you may be asked to attend a Catholic Engaged Encounter, the FOCCUS Inventory, and a Diocesan Retreat. Our team will guide you based on your needs.
