The parol—the star-shaped Christmas lantern—is one of the most enduring symbols of Filipino Christmas, representing hope, faith, unity, and resilience. The five‑pointed star form directly references the biblical Star of Bethlehem. The parol also embodies bayanihan—the Filipino spirit of communal cooperation—through shared crafting and neighborhood celebrations. The tradition dates to the Spanish colonial period, when simple bamboo and paper lanterns lit the way during the Simbang Gabi (nine pre‑dawn Masses). In essence, the Philippine parol is more than decoration—it is a light‑bearing emblem of Filipino identity, blending faith, history, and community spirit into a single, glowing symbol.
On Thursday, November 12th at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Dining Room, come and learn about this beautiful tradition. Feast on Filipino lumpia and pancit. RSVP at the Welcome Table or the Parish Office, as space and supplies will be limited. A $5.00 per-person donation for materials is appreciated.
