Confirmation is the sacrament in which a baptized Catholic is strengthened by the Holy Spirit to live their faith more fully and take on the mission of being a disciple of Christ.
Confirmation is important because it:
Deepens baptismal grace. Baptism begins Christian life; Confirmation strengthens it.
Gives the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Traditionally, these are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.
Strengthens a person for witness. Catholics believe Confirmation helps someone live and speak the faith with courage, not just privately but publicly.
More fully unites someone to the Church. It is a sacrament of belonging and mission, not just a personal milestone.
Completes Christian initiation. Together, Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist are called the sacraments of initiation.
