Making Our Lives Sacred

Grain of Wheat

This is the last Sunday before Holy Week. We must prepare ourselves with greater attention and be conscience with greater love to the mysteries that our eyes will see, and the words that will bless our Heart, giving it health and conversion. We can easily identify with those Greeks who had the longing to know Jesus, that this longing will be deeper in our hearts.

We must be aware that following Jesus implies following in his footsteps in everything He does. That is, proclaiming the liberation of people, healing people’s wounds, walking with those who need company, fighting for the incorporation of those who have been rejected, and most importantly, doing everything it takes even to the ultimate consequences. This can even mean death.

This Lenten season should serve us to reflect on the call to follow Jesus. While it is true that the message is that not everything ends on the cross, but that the resurrection arrives on the third day, it is also true that you have to go through death and sacrifice to reach new life.

What does it mean that Christ calls us to follow him even to the ultimate consequences? On the one hand, it means that we must make Jesus’ actions our own even if it costs us our lives. On the other hand, it means that we must make our lives, like the life of Jesus, sacred. “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. In Jesus we see a person who walked with the poor, who did not refuse to break religious rules to heal the sick, who gave dignity to people rejected by society, and who broke out against the economic injustices of the system under which he lived. If Jesus could make his life sacred through these actions of solidarity to the end, then those who follow him and proclaim him must have the courage to do the same. This is, after all, the call we receive from our Lord and God.
