Being Franciscan: the Power of Prayer

FRANCISCAN FRIARS – PROVINCE OF Our Lady of Guadalupe

We are a religious order of men in the Catholic Church who follow Jesus Christ in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.  We come from many ethnic backgrounds, and we have men in their twenties and early nineties and all the in-between!  In our order, we have brothers and priests.  What makes us different is that Franciscans are brothers, and some of our brothers are also ordained to the ministerial priesthood.  Collectively, we are called FRIARS, which means BROTHERS in Latin.

We live in a community, and we call ourselves a Fraternity.  We are a religious family of brothers. This means we depend on one another for support, friendship, and care.  We pray and eat together daily; like any family, we try to ‘show up’ for one another.  The Franciscan friars of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe are members of a Roman Catholic religious order from a diversity of backgrounds and cultures, dedicated to serving the poor and promoting justice, peace, care of creation, and reconciliation in the joyful and prophetic spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.

We live in peace with all people, with reverence and care for God’s creation in imitation of St. Francis.  We put God at the center of our lives – we live according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ – and go through the world joyfully as St. Francis wanted us to.  Some friars teach in universities, and others are missionaries in foreign countries. We have friars who are artists and musicians, cooks and tailors. St. Francis wanted his brothers to be busy and to work like everyone else – what we do depends on each man’s gifts and abilities.
