From the Pastoral Team
On February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, popularly known as Candlemas, the Catholic Church also celebrates the World Day for Consecrated Life. The U.S. Bishops Conference has asked parishes to celebrate that day this weekend. Just as candles are usually blessed on the Feast of the Presentation to symbolize Christ as the light of the world, so too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples.
Pope Saint John Paul II established this day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life in 1997. He stated that “The mission of the consecrated life in the present and in the future of the Church concerns not merely those who have received this special charism, but the entire Christian community.”
The Franciscans are one of many religious orders of consecrated persons. It is the Franciscans who founded Mission San Luis Rey (Friar Fermín Lasuén, a coworker of Saint Junipero Serra) and have been serving in this parish. We consider it a blessing and a privilege to be able to serve you and to share with you the uniquely Franciscan charism.
The Franciscan friars have always been thought of as “of the people and with the people.” The friars do not consider themselves as better than anyone, and therefore they withhold judgment and accept everyone as they are. “All are welcome” is the phrase at the heart of Franciscan hospitality.
If you or someone you know is interested in exploring more about a vocation to the consecrated life, please join me and Sister Madeline from the Order of St. Clare in our vocation discernment group on Tuesday, February 21 at 7:00 P.M in our Youth Room on the second floor. Also, feel free to talk to any of us friars anytime.
Please pray for all of us who have made commitments in the consecrated life. May we continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God’s gift of our vocation.
Peace, Fr. Sam Nasada, OFM
