By Bishop Cardinal Robert Mcelroy
The Serra Center was blessed and dedicated* in 1996 for us to hold Mass. However, it was never consecrated because it was initially built to be a worship and multipurpose space. After paying off the construction loan, the friars made several changes to transform the space into a permanent church.
Previous friars, including our current pastor, stopped secular activities such as receptions inside Serra. Recent changes include adding pews, stations of the cross, and a permanent altar. All these modifications were made so that we could consecrate our worship space.
Consecration is the act of separating a building from common and profane to sacred use or by dedicating it to the service and worship of God through prayer, rites, and ceremonies. As we prepare to honor the vision of our friars and welcome Bishop Cardinal McElroy, please save the date, Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., to join us in witnessing the very special consecration ceremony of our Mission San Luis Rey Parish Church.
(*Since the 2013 Roman Missal revision, the word dedicated has been used to mean consecrated. However, before that revision, a dedication was synonymous with blessed.)
