Found by God

Cross Catholic Outreach

The gospel reading for today is the entire 15th chapter of Luke’s gospel. It appears to be all about ‘lost property’: the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son. Jesus told these three stories in response to the Pharisees who accused him of consorting with sinners – people who had lost their way.

But to be more exact, these parables are not about the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son; they are not about being lost, but about being found. Each of them underlines the joy of the finder: God’s joy in seeking and finding what is lost. ‘Rejoice’ is the keyword at the end of each story. These stories are Jesus’ revelation of what God is like. He had a vivid imagination and could have told any kind of story, but he chose these. Think of the times we have lost something and the joy we get when we find it. This is just a fraction of the joy that God gets when a sinner repents.

Jesus could have told any kind of story to reveal what God is like. That he mentioned these is a matter of tremendous significance. God rejoices to find what is lost. It doesn’t require any moral extracts because its appeal is much deeper than thought. It works in us; it shapes us if we allow ourselves to dwell in it.

Thank you to Fr. Kumanda and Fr. Chavez, from Cross Catholic Outreach, who presided at our Masses today. Their message of hope, mercy and ministry work with the poor was inspiring!

Many blessings to all our catechesis, catechist aids/helpers and Faith Formation Staff, as we celebrate Catechetical Sunday today. May your ministry continue to positively impact the lives of our future generations.

It’s not too early to order your Christmas cards. After Mass, please see one of the Brother Knights to reserve your order.

Congratulations to our Mexican and Latin American communities as they celebrate their independence day. If you have an opportunity, after Mass, please stop by the front lawn and enjoy this festive celebration and cultural dishes.

Lastly, we have many events to celebrate as a Parish Community. Please mark your calendar for San Lorenzo Ruiz 9/28, Transitus 10/3, St. Francis Feast 10/4, St. Francis Blessing of Pets 10/5, and Evening with the Friars on 11/15.

Peace and all Good. Fr. Oscar
