From Our Associate Pastor.
The Franciscan movement started with a few local people helping Francis care for the lepers outside the city walls of Assisi. For the early Franciscans, this was the privileged place where they could encounter Christ himself and undergo conversion.
This is why nowadays you would find Franciscans taking care of the poor rather than blaming them for making wrong decisions in life; walking with people struggling with abortion rather than telling them they are going to hell; accompanying LGBT individuals more than calling them abomination; providing care to migrants regardless of their status instead of disparaging them for coming to our country; standing with Native American, Black and other communities that experience real discrimination rather than trying to preserve our own privilege; and so on.
Some of you may not feel comfortable with some or all of those positions. However, we Franciscans cannot separate ourselves from our identity as followers of the Poor Man from Assisi who chose to go to the peripheries to care for those who have been shunned by society. My hope is that, as a member of a parish that claims to live the Gospel in the spirit of St. Francis, you would be willing to embrace this mission as well. Who knows, what seems bitter to you now might later be turned into sweetness.
