Members of the Pastoral Council attended a Cultural & Diversity Council program this evening about Our Lady of Guadalupe. Parishioner Enrique Velazquez educated us about the importance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to so many people. We learned a bit about the history of Mexico in relation to the early Spanish soldiers and priests - as they interacted with the native Aztec peoples.

Enrique shared some of the many similarities between the Aztec views of their god, and what the Franciscans shared about the Catholic religion.

The Virgin Mary’s apparition to Saint Juan Diego, as evidenced on the miracle of the image of Mary on the Tilma, appears to be the turning point for the conversion of millions of Aztecs. This devotion continues today.

The annual commemoration of the apparition will take place here next week, culminating with special services on Dec. 11-12. See the Bulletin for details.

Many thanks to Enrique. I learned so much. I thought I knew the story of Our Lady but had only barely scratched the surface. Pax et Bonum

Join us tomorrow:
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 7:00 PM University of San Diego, Founders Hall, French Parlor Saint Francis, Master of Prayer, Part 1 with Michael Higgins, TOR

The writings of St. Francis and the legends about the saint demonstrate the important place of prayer in his spiritual journey. This first part of the two-part presentation will explore the depth and richness of the prayers that he composed. As many scholars point out, he truly deserves the title of Master of Prayer.
