On Saturday, February 15th, some of the leaders of our Hispanic Community organized the event, Valentine’s Dinner and Dance, to support the General Fund of our parish. It was organized by the Hispanic Community, but opened to all. Last week, Fran Grothe shared how much she and her husband enjoyed this event. I asked her to write down her experience so that other parishioners might be inspired by her experience stepping out of her comfort zone. These are her words:
My husband Jerry and I have attended a number of social events and fundraisers at the Mission and Parish.
However, this was the first time for us to experience an intercultural event. Stepping outside of our comfort zone, we decided to attend. We wanted to support the goal of our parish to become intercultural.
The evening began with a warm welcome at the entrance. Entering the hall, we could select our own table seats. Immediately, we were greeted by our friendly server, who served us throughout the evening. It was appreciated to be served and not to wait in a buffet line.
More important than the ambience, good food and music (not too loud)! It was the atmosphere, a feeling of belonging, with people of like mind and spirit. We were all believers. The difference in our culture and native language did not present an issue for us. The parish family is much like our own. We are all different from each other but share the same Heavenly Father.
We very much enjoyed our evening and strongly encourage others to step out of their comfort zone so that they can connect with other parishioners that will expand their circle of friends.
Peace and all good, Fran Grothe
Thank you, Fran, for sharing your experience with us and inviting us to grow on interculturalism.
Fraternally, Fr. Lalo
