- Join us at Mission San Luis Rey for our first summer camp. It will be a week of fun activities in which children will learn about the community at Mission San Luis Rey, from the Native Americans and the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians, the Franciscan friars, and all the groups that are part of our Mission today. We can connect past and present with fun, creative activities to let your children discover more about our community.
Day 1. The Original Inhabitants
Day 2. Franciscans and their Legacy
Day 3. Diversity
Day 4. Our Land – Nature and the Environment
Day 5. Family and Community
The week will include exploring the mission grounds through exciting scavenger hunts and guided nature hikes while learning about the history of the Luiseno people and the Franciscan Friars. Hands-on activities through Luiseno and Franciscan-inspired arts and crafts that emphasize the value of creation and use of natural elements such as a gourd rattle, beaded jewelry with recycled paper, bird feeder, and nature prints with clay and decorated with dye from the native cochineal insects. Campers will also work as a team to build a model of the mission with hand-made adobe bricks.
After signing up, you will receive a registration form, a full schedule, and our summer camp guide. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Helena Hazleton at helena@sanluisrey.org or at 760-757-3651 ext. 170
