CHALKING THE DOOR / TIZAR LA PUERTA
Last year, Fr. Sam introduced the Polish tradition of “Chalking the Door” at Epiphany. This blessing offers a way to remember the visit of the Magi and dedicate your home to the Lord.
The tradition begins by taking white chalk to write either ‘K+M+B’ or ‘C+M+B’ and the year on the outside of the lintel of your front door (or even mark a small piece of cardboard and place it on your door or a front window). Your choice of letters: ‘K+M+B’ stands for the initials of the three kings who came to worship baby Jesus: Kaspar (Casper), Melchior, and Balthazar. You can also write ‘C+M+B’, for the phrase ‘Christus mansionem benedicat’ (Latin: ‘Christ blesses this house’).
Here’s a sample: 20 + K + M + B + 23. Then say this: The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who became human two thousand and twenty-three years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen.
Or you can write: 20 + C + M + B + 23, and say: May Christ bless this house.
Whichever initials you choose, follow your chalking with the following prayer: Visit, O Blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.

El año pasado, el Padre Sam introdujo la tradición polaca de “marcar con tiza la puerta” en la Epifanía. Esta bendición ofrece una forma de recordar la visita de los Reyes Magos y dedicar su hogar al Señor.
La tradición comienza tomando tiza blanca para escribir ‘K+M+B’ o ‘C+M+B’ y el año en el exterior del dintel de la puerta de su casa (o incluso marque un pequeño cartón y colóquelo en su puerta o en una ventana delantera). Su elección de letras: ‘K+M+B’ representa las iniciales de los tres reyes que vinieron a adorar al niño Jesús: Kaspar (Gaspar), Melchor y Baltasar. También puede escribir ‘C+M+B’, para la frase ‘Christus mansionem benedicat’ (en latín: ‘Cristo bendice esta casa’).
He aquí un ejemplo: 20 + K + M + B + 23. Luego di esto: Los tres Reyes Magos, Gaspar, Melchor y Baltasar siguieron la estrella del Hijo de Dios que se hizo humano hace dos mil veintitrés años. Que Cristo bendiga nuestro hogar y permanezca con nosotros durante todo el año nuevo. Amén.
O puede escribir: 20 + C + M + B + 23, y decir: Que Cristo bendiga esta casa.
